Products
|
LabVelocity's free universal catalog is designed to help you quickly find and compare product information. It is organized by subject for intuitive point-and-click navigation, so you can find products even when you don't know a product's name, supplier or its catalog number. Product descriptions include supplier contact information and where available, links to supplier Web sites for e-commerce, but there is no obligation to purchase. You can also create and save lists of products that you may print and email to your purchasing department. To assist your experimental planning, our products are integrated with related protocols and other technical resources when they are available.
Searching the Catalog
Search products by (1) Direct Navigation through the LabVelocity product catalog, (2) Product Name Search, (3) a combination of Direct Navigation and the Product Name Search, and (4) Catalog Search.
-
Direct Navigation
Use when you want to compare and survey new products from multiple companies
- Subject headings will guide you through our catalog from general to specific product categories, where you will select product features to help find the exact type of product you want. See Selecting Product Features for details.
-
A Breadcrumb Trail (visible just above Product Name Search box) records your progress through the catalog, allowing you to navigate backward and re-direct your search.
Example:
The Breadcrumb Trail for navigating the catalog from Cell Biology to Complete ELISA Kits will display:
Home : Products : Cell Biology / Immunology : ELISA : Complete ELISA Kits.
Click "Cell Biology / Immunology" to navigate backward to that section of the catalog.
-
Product Name Search
Use when you are unsure of where a product is located within the catalog but know a part of its name.
- It locates products by performing keyword searches on product names. See Product Keyword Search Tips (below) for rules.
- A Product name Search displays all the categories containing products matching your keyword search. (Due to overlap in scientific disciplines, many of our suppliers' products appear in several different categories.)
-
Combination of Direct Navigation and the Product Name Search
- You can use the Product Name Search in combination with Direct Navigation. The Product Name Search will follow your Direct Navigation, and return increasingly precise matches by restricting its search to your current level within the catalog.
-
Catalog Search
Use when you want to find all of the products from a single company, or when you want to find a specific product and know both its company name and catalog number.
To find all the products from a single company:
- Click “All Products” within the Catalog Search box.
- Select a company name from the pulldown box “Company:”
- Click “Go.”
- A successful search lists every category that contains products from your selected company. See Products in Multiple Categories for details.
To find a single product using its company name and catalog number:
- Click “Catalog Number:” within the Catalog Search box.
- Select a company name from the pulldown box “Company:”
- Type a catalog number into the text box. The catalog-number search is not case- or space-sensitive.
- Click “Go.”
- A successful search connects you to the Additional Product Information page of your product.
|
Product Keyword Search Tips
There are two keyword searches within the product catalog:
- The Product Name Search locates products in the catalog by performing keyword searches on product names.
- Within the Antibody and ELISA Kit categories there is a text box that searches for an antigen (that you enter) by keyword, but does not accept the multiple term linkers AND or OR (see below).
Exact Phrases
LabVelocity text searches are case-insensitive and exact; words entered together are treated as phrases unless linked by operators such as AND or OR. The text search engine does not conduct stem word searches.
Example:
A search for "membrane" returns entries containing membrane but not membranes.
AND / OR
Link multiple terms using AND or OR.
Examples:
- "CD72 AND CD4" only returns entries containing both CD72 and CD4.
- "CD72 OR CD4" returns entries containing CD72, CD4, or both CD72 and CD4.
Wildcard
The percent symbol (%) acts as a wildcard character.
Use it to replace portions of words that are uncertain or that vary. The percent symbol (%) may be used at the beginning, middle or end of any word.
Example:
"chemilumines%" returns both chemiluminescent and chemiluminescence, while "%luminescent" returns luminescent, chemiluminescent and bioluminescent.
Abbreviations
Common abbreviations and acronyms can help find difficult chemical names.
Example:
A Search for "EDTA" will locate entries containing the abbreviation for Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid but not those only containing its full chemical name. Use AND or OR to search for both.
Greek Characters
Our text searches do not accept Greek characters. You should replace Greek characters with either its Latin equivalent or the percent symbol wildcard.
Example:
Use "TNF-alpha" or "TNF%" instead of "TNF-α".
- "TNF-alpha" is the more exact search, and will return products titles containing "TNF-alpha", but those with only "TNF-α" will not be found.
- "TNF%" is a more inclusive alternative, and will return all product titles containing either "TNF-alpha" or "TNF-α", but also those containing "TNF-beta" or "TNF-β".
Products in Multiple Categories
After Product Name Searches
Due to overlap in scientific disciplines, many of our suppliers' products appear in several different categories. A successful Product Name Search or "All Products" Catalog Searches displays all the categories containing products matching your keyword search (with the number of matches in parentheses), and for each you will have the option to:
- View Exact Matches
Displays a comparison table of all products in a category matching your search.
-
Search Category
Gives you the opportunity to further refine your search by choosing precise product features (see Selecting Product Features).
Example:
A Product Name Search of all products with "CD14" returns:
Antibodies (48)
view exact matches or search category
Flow Cytometry Reagent Kits (20)
view exact matches or search category
Selecting Product Features
After Direct Navigation, Product Name Searches, or "All Products" Catalog Searches
After Direct Navigation of the product catalog or clicking "Search Category" following a Product Name Search or "All Products" Catalog Searches you have the opportunity to choose specific product features (e.g., for a Complete ELISA Kit: species specificity, detection target, detection methodology, and so on) so your search will be as accurate as possible. Clicking "Revise Search" from either the product comparison table or Additional Product Information page also allows you to select product features.
Rules (The following examples are for finding an ELISA Kit.)
- Related product features are grouped into multi-select, pulldown, check-box and radio-button menus (e.g., company names are grouped into the multi-select menu titled "Manufacturer").
- Clicking blue information buttons next to menu titles will pop-up brief explanations to help you select features within that menu.
- Select as few or as many features as you need to refine your search. Selecting no features at all returns all products in the category.
-
Selections among menus are AND searches; selecting product features from multiple menus makes a search more specific.
Example:
Selecting one Manufacturer, one Species Specificity, and one Detection Methodology would result in a search for only ELISA Kits from the chosen Manufacturer with the chosen Species Specificity, AND with the chosen Detection Methodology.
-
Selections within a single menu, however, are OR searches; selecting multiple features within a menu broadens a search.
Example:
Choosing human, mouse and rabbit in the Species Specificity multi-select menu, will return all ELISA Kits with anti-human OR anti-mouse OR anti-rabbit specificity, plus any possible combination of the three.
-
If you want to select all features within a menu, leave it blank (i.e., do not select any features).
Example:
Not selecting any features within the Manufacturer multi-select menu will return Complete ELISA Kits from all Manufacturers.
- If you're using the Windows OS, hold the control key [Ctrl] down within multi-select menus to select or de-select multiple features using the mouse. If you're using the Macintosh OS, hold the Apple key down instead.
-
You can also navigate using the alphabetic keyboard in the Windows OS.
Example:
Within Species Specificity, the [M] key will direct you first to mouse, then monkey, then mycoplasma.
- There is a text box within the Antibody and Complete ELISA Kit categories that searches for an antigen (that you enter) feature by keyword, but does not accept the multiple term linkers AND or OR. For other keyword search details, see Product Keyword Search Tips.
Comparison Table Search Results
From Direct Navigation, Product Name Searches, or "All Products" Catalog Searches
- When a search is complete, product matches are displayed in a comparison table containing company names, prices, and functional product information.
- Only registered LabVelocity users from the United States will see product prices.
- You can organize the comparison table alphabetically by Manufacturer ("Made By") or Product Name, or numerically by Price (most inexpensive at the top) by clicking arrow buttons located below column titles.
- Clicking blue information buttons below column titles will pop-up column descriptions.
- Clicking product names will display Additional Product Information (below), including supplier links, product details, and other price and size variations.
- If you then wish to search again for similar products, use the Breadcrumb Trail to navigate backward through the catalog or click "Revise Search" to change your search's features.
Search Results
From Catalog Searches
A Catalog Search bypasses the comparison table, ending directly at Additional Product Information (below).
Additional Product Information
Following a "Catalog Number" Catalog Search or comparison table
-
You reach Additional Product Information directly following a successful "Catalog Number" Catalog Search. Otherwise you reach the Additional Product Information page by clicking product names within a comparison table. The Additional Product Information includes:
- Product catalog number(s)
- Price and size variations
- Supplier information and links
- Supplier-provided product details
- Clicking "Add" will create a Product List, or you can add your product selection to a current (not archived) Product List. See Product List (below) for details.
- To save, print, or email a search result, use either the Product List or the Options box (see below).
- If you then wish to search again for similar products, use the Breadcrumb Trail to navigate backward through the catalog, or click "Revise Search" to change your search's features.
- Clicking "Back to Results" connects you back to your comparison table of product search results.
Searches Returning No Results
After Selecting Product Features
- If your search returns no results, try expanding your search by selecting fewer features (i.e., only those features essential to your product) - selecting product features from too many different groups can create an overly specific search (see Selecting Product Features). You may also try a blank search (i.e., selecting no features), which will return all products in the category.
- If you're still having problems finding a product, it may not be in our database yet. Please if there are products you would like included in it.
Saving, Printing, and Emailing Search Results
Once you have found a product, you can save or print search results for future reference. You can also fax printed results or email them to colleagues and your purchasing department by using either the Product List or Options Box.
Product List
Use this to compile lists of product searches that you can then save, print, and email.
- Following a successful product search, click "Add" from a product's Additional Product Information page to create a new Product List, or to add a product to an existing one. There is no limit to the number of products you can add from a single search or series of different searches, but products must be added individually.
- View and edit products within your Product List from anywhere on the site by clicking "Product List" (a link in the upper right-hand corner of your LabVelocity screen).
- Products in your list are organized by supplier.
-
Links to Companies
- A yellow "More Info" button links to supplier Web sites for additional product information.
- A red "Shop Online!" button indicates that a supplier on your shopping list has an e-commerce enabled Web site. Click this to link to the supplier and purchase a product from your shopping list.
- Once at a supplier's Web site, the LabVelocity sidebar remains at the left of the screen and displays only those products on your Product List that are from that supplier. You can return to your Product List by clicking "Return to Full List", or to your homepage using "Back to LabVelocity". You may also link directly to the Web site of another supplier on your Product List by selecting it from the pulldown box "Online Stores".
- You may also email your Product List or create a printer-friendly version for reference or faxing.
- The "Continue Shopping" button links to the Product homepage. Click your browser's Back button if you still wish to search, but not return to the Product homepage.
Saving Product Lists
- Clicking "save a copy of this list" opens a pop-up box that you may use to save your entire Product List as a file into a Lab Manager folder. To save a Product List into a folder, select a folder or subfolder within the pop-up box (the Lab Manager folder is the default), name your Product List file using the text box, and click "Save".
- Saving your Product List into a Lab Manager folder clears the current Product List memory; the next product you add will create a new list. You cannot add products to saved Product Lists.
Options Box
Use this to save or email the result of a single search.
- Save Products
Clicking "Save Product" opens a pop-up window that you may use to save your single product as a file into a Lab Manager folder. It does not add a product to a Product List. To save a single product into a folder, select a folder or subfolder within the pop-up window (the Lab Manager folder is the default), name your single product file using the text box (the product's title is the default), and click "Save".

Literature
|
|
The LabVelocity literature service hosts the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE database. Currently, the NLM updates MEDLINE weekly.
Searching Literature
Search Literature using either a Basic Search or an Advanced Search.
- A Basic Search lets you perform a literature search by Keyword, Title Word, Author Name and / or Publication Date.
- An Advanced Search lets you choose additional search parameters, including Journal Name, Language, Country, Publication Type, Institutional Affiliation, and MeSH Headings.
Literature Search Parameters
Keyword
-
The Keyword search field allows you to enter single- or multiple-word concepts.
Example:
A search for "Breast Cancer" returns references where "breast cancer" appears in the title or abstract.
-
You can search for more than one concept by separating terms using operators like AND, OR, or NOT.
Example:
"Breast AND Cancer" will return a search result of articles that contain both "Breast" and "Cancer" in their title or abstract.
-
The Keyword search is exact.
Example:
"Virus" and "Viruses" will product different results.
-
The search engine does not expand to related terms and concepts when performing a search.
Example:
A search for "B Cell" will not return article references with "B lymphocyte" (unless "B Cell" is also in the article's title or abstract).
Title
-
The Title search field also allows you to search article titles using single or multiple word concepts.
Example:
A search for "Breast Cancer" returns references where "breast cancer" appears in the title.
-
You can search for more than one concept by separating terms using operators like AND, OR, or NOT.
Example:
"Breast AND Cancer" will return a search result of articles that have both "Breast" and "Cancer" in their titles.
Author Name
-
The Author Name search finds the names of people who are listed as authors in publications. Names mentioned only in a title or abstract will not be found. The format for entering a name is the author's surname followed by his or her initials or first name. (You don't need to use periods to separate initials.)
Example:
Smith JC
-
Multiple authors can be searched for by separating their names with a comma.
Example:
Smith JC, Jones MV
Journal Name
- To search within a particular journal, you must enter either its exact name or the official abbreviated name that is used in journal article references. The correct names can be found by clicking the Journal Name icon. The Journal Name database is organized alphabetically; click the first letter of the Journal Title to be taken to that area of the list. Click the title of the journal you wish to search in and it will automatically be entered into the Journal Name field.
Publication Date
-
To speed searches, the engine's default is set to search for articles published from 1997 to the present. The pulldown menu contains all the years that MEDLINE has been in existence, going back to 1966. To search for articles in certain years or ranges of years, select the oldest date you want to search in the Start field, and the most recent in the End field.
Examples:
- To search for an article published sometime in the late 1980's, select "1985" in the Start field, and "1989" in the End field.
- To search for an article in 1994, select "1994" in both fields. If you leave the End field blank, it will search from the first selected date to the present.
- To search for articles from 1994 to the present, select "1994" in the Start field and leave the End field blank (or select "2000").
- The search cannot look for specific dates (such as a month or day), only for specific years.
Language
- The default setting in the Language field is to search for articles published in any language. To search specifically for an article that was published in English, French, German, or Italian, select the appropriate choice from the pulldown Language menu.
Institutional Affiliation
- Generally, the primary author's institutional affiliation is cataloged. The primary author is usually listed as the last author in an article. To search by the affiliation of the primary author, enter the name of the institution.
MeSH Headings
- MeSH headings are the Medical Subject Headings created by the National Library of Medicine. MeSH is a controlled vocabulary used for indexing articles, cataloging books, and searching MeSH-indexed databases. Since MEDLINE is a MeSH-indexed database, you can search it using MeSH terms. Every entry in our Database comes indexed with a list of MeSH terms. The terms associated with any particular article are listed in the expanded reference that can be found by clicking "View Full Record" at the bottom of an article's abstract page.
Search Results
- By default you will receive search results in blocks of 25 references. To receive your search results in larger or smaller blocks of references, choose 10, 25, 50, 100, or 500 from the pulldown menu.
- When you perform a search, you will receive a maximum of 500 article references in a list, even if there are more than 500 articles that match your search. The total number of matching articles will be listed at the top of the reference list.
|
|
Literature Agent
|
|
|
Customizable Literature Agents automatically search MEDLINE and will save new articles for you into a folder that you can view from your homepage; it can also alert you by email when new articles arrive.
To create an Agent:
- Select parameters for either a Basic Search or an Advanced Search of MEDLINE (whatever parameters you select for your literature search here will be used by the Literature Agent later to automatically search MEDLINE).
- Click "Search MEDLINE".
- After receiving your list of matching articles, click "Create an Agent to monitor this search" located in the sidebar.
- A pop-up window will appear titled "Create an Agent"; you must name your agent using the text box (e.g., agent_99) and can click a yes/no radio button (the default is "no") to receive email alerts of new search results. Click "Save" to activate your new agent.
- The Literature Agent will now search MEDLINE automatically, using whatever parameters you selected for your initial literature search, whenever MEDLINE updates its database (currently every Monday).
- If you designated your Agent to email alerts, it will do so when it finds new articles corresponding to your search.
- Additionally, your Agent will save these MEDLINE search results as bookmark links (to abstracts) into the file you previously named. This file is located within the folder named "My Agents", which is a blue folder in the Lab Manager file directory.
- The next time you click to your homepage the folder "My Agents" will appear (opened) at the top of the window and will display a list of all your Literature Agent files, including information on whether or not each Literature Agent has recently saved any new articles.
- To retrieve articles, click an agent file icon, from either your homepage or from the Lab Manager directory page. You will then receive a list of article titles, just as if you had performed your own literature search, with new results marked by red asterisks. Each time the Agent performs a new productive search it will add bookmarks to this list. The results from your original search (the one you used to create the agent) are not saved in this file.
- To inactivate an Agent you must delete it; click the Agent's icon and click "Delete" within the Lab Manager.
- Once created, you cannot change an Agent's search parameters; you will have to delete the agent and create a new one.
- Click "Edit" within the Lab Manager to change an Agent's name or to turn on/off its ability to email alerts.
- Currently there is no limit to the number of article links a Literature Agent can bookmark.

Lab Manager
|
|
The Lab Manager lets you save and organize all the information you gather at LabVelocity including: products, protocols, technical references, and MEDLINE abstracts.
"My Files" and "My Agents" Basics
Lab Manager stores your information as bookmarks into files. These files are organized into folders located within the sidebar directory "My Files" and "My Agents." All information gathered at LabVelocity, except for abstracts found by Literature Agents, is stored within the sidebar directory "My Files." Literature Agents you create are stored within the yellow Lab Manager folder "My Agents."
- The blue folders marked "L" in the "My Files" directory are pre-named, default folders. There are default folders for Literature, Product Lists, Products, Protocols, and Tools & Tables.
- Clicking a folder or a subfolder in the "My Files" directory displays saved files within that folder, including information on file type (e.g., Product List, protocol, and so on) and file name. You may then delete files you have checked or move them into another folder. You may also delete empty folders or create new subfolders; folders that you create are yellow in the "My Files" directory.
- There is no limit to the number or size of folders you can create, or the number or size of files you can save within folders.
- When you create Literature Agents, they appear below the yellow Lab Manager folder "My Agents." See Literature Agent Help for details.
Saving Information into Lab Manager Folders
Products
After a successful product search, you'll receive a comparison table of products matching your search. Clicking blue Product Names in a table links you to the additional product information page for that product--where you can either print, email, and save your product individually or as part of a Product List. From a product's additional information page:
To save an individual product's information:
- Click the "Save product" link from the "Options" sidebar box (located at the left of the product information). A Lab Manager pop-up window will appear--click the "Product" folder within this window, name your product, and click "SAVE."
To save product information contained in a Product List:
- First add the product information to a Product List by clicking the "Add" button under the column "Add to Product List". Next, click the "Product List" button found at the upper right-hand corner of each page on the site, and then click "Save a copy of this list" at the bottom of your Product List. A Lab Manager pop-up window will appear--click the "Product List" folder within this window, name your list, and click "SAVE."
The process for saving information on the rest of the site into "My Files" is identical to saving individual product information:
Protocols and Tables
Once you have downloaded a Protocol or Table's PDF, you can save it by selecting "Save Protocol (or Table)" from the "Options" box found in the left sidebar. A Lab Manager pop-up window will appear. Click the "Protocol" (or "Table") folder within this window, name your product, and click "SAVE."
Literature
Once you have performed a successful search of MEDLINE, you'll receive a list of articles. Clicking blue article titles from this list links you each article's full abstract. From this page you can save an abstract by clicking the "Options" box sidebar link "Save Article". A Lab Manager pop-up window will appear. Click the "Literature" folder within this window, name your product, and click "SAVE."
Literature Agents
Literature Agents you create are stored within the yellow Lab Manager folder "My Agents." See Literature Agents for details.
